Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
