Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
