Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
